Fortune Teller (2026)

People create meaning through signs and symbols, as a way to make the world feel a little more understandable, or a little more within our control.

Things like astrology, personality tests, “what character are you?” quizzes, fortune cookies, tarot cards, candy hearts, Magic 8 Balls, the I Ching — all different systems we use to look for patterns, identity, or glimpses into what’s ahead. Some are ancient, some are playful, many have become commodified, but they all speak to a human impulse.

In this edition, the window is laid out like a paper fortune teller, referencing that desire to peek into the future and feel some sense of anticipation or control over it. The cardinal directions appear in both the Latin alphabet and simplified Chinese characters, alongside the Four Guardians, bringing together ideas of diasporic movement, cultural mixing, and my own relationship to identity and ancestry.

Whether through religion, folklore, science, or superstition, humans invent ways to make sense of the world. And yet, sometimes the world just… is. Beautiful, strange, overwhelming, empty, full of meaning all at the same time. Kind of like watching a sunset.
