Guanyin Ox (2025)

“Guanyin Ox” intertwines the serene presence of Guanyin with the steadfast form of an ox. Rooted in the artist’s maternal lineage— her mother: born in the zodiac year of the ox with a devoted Zen Buddhism practice —the imagery draws on themes from Journey to the West, where Guanyin guides and protects the pilgrims through trials, embodying mercy and wisdom. The ox, steady and enduring, echoes both the mythic ox-spirits encountered on the journey and its traditional associations with diligence and filial devotion. Paired, Guanyin and ox suggest a balance of divine guidance and protectorship, honoring both eastern Buddhist folklore and familial legacy.
