Grandma’s Bananas (2023)
“Grandma's Bananas” is inspired by a portrait of my Chinese grandmother holding a bunch of bananas. The piece mixes traditional and modern elements of Chinese print design - from the traditional illustrated woodblock method invented in the Tang Dynasty (618 – 907 AD) to the idiosyncratic 1940s Chinese propaganda poster style as, showcased through the high contrast sun rays, to the vertical characters (which say "Bananas" in Mandarin) symbolizing a sticker that one often finds on a banana in the supermarket.
